Redshirting .. Holding Kids Back

I watched an article which was profiled on CBS News regards to Redshirting (gaming the system). This was actually the first time I came across this term and was surprised by it, but impressed with the thought process behind it and what some parents will do to ensure that their kids get ahead.
Redshirting is basically holding your child back a year from starting Kindergarten at age 5, which would then allow them that additional year to learn more social, reading and developmental skills. In the video it states that studies have shown that Redshirting does have some positive impacts in years to come, where your kids would be placed in gifted programs because of their already budding development but has drawbacks where the kids would or could be bored in class as they already know the material.
I would be interested to know what are your views on this topic?

  1. What ever happened to just letting children be children and develope and do things at a natural pace.
Is it necessary to control everything? This becomes exhausting at times. Children aren't guinea pigs. A decade ago getting your child into school at age 2 was the rave. They got burnt out by 6 because of helicopter parenting and now we are back to what history had taught us for years. Allow the child to develope certain strengths before thrusting them into a rigorous learning environment with the hopes that you can grow an Einstein or a Bach in a lab.
Parenting is the most important job, use the time to listen to ure child's individual needs and act accordingly.Dont treat children like designer jeans or hot trends because unlike those things their psychological issues will be there for life.
