I'm IV Free!!!

As most of you may have known I have been diagnosed with hyperemesis which is uncontrollable vomiting and not being able to tolerate food and or water. I had a mild case of this with my first child 11yrs ago but nothing compares to what I went through and was going through up to 3wks ago. I have been in and out of the hospital for short ER stays to being admitted twice for this condition.  It was no fun.

If anyone else has gone through this or even something similar they will be familiar to the all the drugs that I have tried first it was the B6 vitamin with Unisom which made me feel as if I was hallucinating so that didn't last for long, then they told me to try Benadryl that was a no go.

The next step after becoming dehydrated was to get me started on IV fluids and started me on Zofran the first try it made me feel a little better the world was not so hazy anymore, I could actually focus on faces OK this might be the stuff NOT!!

Few more days of this constant vomiting every other day in the ER the guy at the front said to me "Hey I remember you, you were here yesterday" Again they searched for my ever fading veins as I was getting more and more dehydrated and told me that I would be spending some time in the hospital as they thought I had pancreatitis. Pancreatitis what the heck is that??? I mentioned to Adri that this has to be a mistake they have no idea what they are doing they must have meant this for the other guy next door to us they must be confused.

I guess I was the one that was confused as they came back and told me they had a bed for me and I would be admitted my heart dropped I was very disappointed I did not want to stay here I wanted to go home. Unfortunately for me my doctors are not affiliated with this hospital so I was assigned to a OB Dr who had no idea what he was doing in my opinion, the nurses did not know what to do for me or how to make me comfortable but they tried their best which I guess I could give them half a star for :)

So they were giving me Zofran every 8hrs, one good thing that came out of it was that I went one whole day without puking WOOPIE there is a light at the end of the tunnel, This was Thursday.

Friday, the Drs came back and told me that there was no sign of pancreatitis SURPRISE SURPRISE!!! apparently there was some spillage of enzymes in my urine from my system being so unbalanced from all the excessive vomiting. So today i'm not feeling well, the beast is raring its ugly head again, hopefully they can figure this out and give me something to make it go away.

The Dr who I will leave anonymous as he is a reputable Dr in our community said to me oh good news Christine you can go home today and my response to this was but I don't feel well, im weak i'm vomiting isn't there something you can do to which he said "This is a tricky situation, hopefully we will figure it out" So that was that I gathered my stuff and I left.

I got home around 2pm with the help of my bro, and it started vicious as ever non stop vomiting I must have puked over 10 times btwn then and about 6pm, I am shaking uncontrollably and now there is blood. My sis, hubby and bro decided that it was time to head back to the hospital but lets go to the other one St. B. so we get there after more puking in the car and the put me on the IV and gave me a booster shot of Reglan.

This may be it I thought as I felt better and smiled as I saw Adri knocked out on the chair and Jan holding all the coats and pocket books as she too nodded off. They sent us home, thankfully the next day my dr had ordered me to have a Reglan pump at home and constant IV fluids going to keep me stable.

Saturday, I woke up not feeling too bad but I woke up shaking what the heck now what is going on, I ran to the bathroom loose bowels, where did that come from I haven't eaten in weeks ???  Finally Fed Ex is here with boxes and boxes of meds we could open our own pharmacy.

The nurse came in and showed us or should I say showed Adri how to set up the IV and administer the drugs as I was in and out the room puking, poked the Reglan pump in my belly I had to carry it around like a purse, along with dragging my IV pole around everywhere I go.

Everyone has been so helpful bringing me ice chips, food etc. Ok its been two days of meds and I'm still puking when is this thing going to work. After two days we realized the pump is not working GREAT!!! I have a great nurse Nancy who calls me everyday to check in on my weight, ketones in my urine how many times have I puked etc. "Nancy it's not working i'm still puking when will this end" She calls the Dr after 3 days being on the pump they called me back "pack your bags your going back to the hospital to get stabilized and get a picc line in"

So I spent 5 days in the hospital they inserted the picc line in my arm which flows the meds straight into my body I am now on Promethazine this is the good stuff, I feel good I am not puking I CAN EAT HALLELUJAH!!!!!

A nurse comes to the house and changes my dressing every week, its now been 5wks with my picc line in and would you know it we now think its infected. So they sent me to the hospital last wk Tuesday I waited for 5.5hrs they tell me thats not bad as today avg wait time was 7-8 wow lucky me!! The Dr checked it told me it looks good I can go home. Next day OB  calls me go back to the hospital do an X-ray lets see if its ok and oh by the way you have a hypo active thyroid you may need meds, go did the X-ray alls well.

Yesterday the nurse comes the site doesn't look that great, i have an ugly rash under it, back to the hospital to have it removed I'M FREE no more dragging the IV behind me, and yes its confirmed I do indeed have a hypo active thyroid so as I wait to find out what the plan of action is for that I will continue marching on until the next episode of this twin experience.
